Learn how to advocate for your neighborhood and community needs in the State
Legislature. Will cover basics of the legislative process, do's and don'ts
of lobbying visits, staying on message, public speaking skills for committee
testimony, and connecting your neighborhood issues with those of other
statewide advocacy organizations on neighborhood issues such as land
use/Measure 37, education/school, housing, transportation funding, liquor
licensing and beer taxes for alcohol and drug treatment, etc. Hear from
neighborhood and community leaders the lessons learned from experience.
Workshops are free and open to the public.
Space is limited so advance registration is highly recommended.
*Basic introductory skills you'll learn:*
- Quick overview of how the State legislature works, how a bill
becomes a law
- Mobilizing your base of membership or coalitions to have the most
effective impact
- Do's and don'ts for lobbying visits with legislators
- Preparing your message for testimony before legislative committee
hearings
*Who should attend:*
- Neighborhood or community leaders who want to be more effective
advocates on community issues impacted by State laws
- Individuals wanting to organize their neighborhood or community on
issues such as education or transportation funding, liquor licensing, and
land use laws.
