Land use: Patrick Sweeney talked about a CNN meeting he attended June 12. The current CNN building will be turned back into an operating fire station when the CNN offices move into the new station on 82nd. The board voted to buy bricks that will honor fallen firefighters of Sept. 11.

Rose City Cemetery has come up with a new 10-year master plan. Patrick met with a representative of Winterbrook Planning and another representative from Cully neighborhood for a tour of the site. There was the impression that the cemetery has turned its back onto the neighborhood. Some ideas that have been generated to forge a better relationship include putting low shrubs at intersections to offer views into the cemetery and adding a curb and sidewalk at 47th. Patrick will post info as to where public comment should be directed for the upcoming public hearing.

There was discussion of the barbed wire fence and a history of problems with vandalism, drug dealing and prostitution.

Patrick got advice from Bob Ueland in Hollywood about getting design guidelines put through City Council for an ordinance.

Patrick then asked about protocol of the land use committee. Generally, it can come up with recommendations to the board. In case of emergency decisions, the committee is allowed to make the decision on the board’s behalf.

Ted Perkins said BWNA gets two votes at the CNN land use meetings. He asked whether we are sending two representatives.

Melissa Ritter reported on efforts to get a speed reader board for the Fremont.

Willie Nolan reported on a petition for a stop sign at 40th and Siskiyou.

Melissa reported on calls she received about speeding on Prescott. Patrick reported on another call he received about a dangerous intersection on the south side of Fremont. Gloria talked about traffic outside the church on Shaver.

Trees: Melissa says trees that were planted this March are being monitored.

Homes tour: No action yet.

School project: Debra talked about the ways residents can help out.

Picnic: Jose Escobar said he got the permit. A letter soliciting donations will be sent out shortly. He praised Roger Meyer’s picnic manual. More volunteers will be needed to set up. Gloria said she would check on the availability of other tables. Debra talked about recognizing the newsletter deliverers at the picnic.

Fremont Fest: Margaret Davis is looking for someone to take over the neighborhood association’s table due to a scheduling conflict.

Crime prevention: Jose mentioned incidents at 39th and Skidmore and that someone robbed Justin’s at knifepoint and was captured. On 38th there were police cars making a house call recently.

Newsletter: Helen Koba mentioned a couple of outstanding articles and solicited material. Gloria handed out information about a sale and cook-off at the church.

Bulky waste: Willie asked when the best time would be to undertake a pickup.

There was discussion about what role politicians can play at the picnic. They are welcome to come, but it is not a forum for campaigning.

Surveys: Debra has received a lot of responses. Most were mailed in. Helen asked Jim Karlock to make more copies of the survey to have available at Fremont Fest and the picnic. Melissa volunteered to help summarize the results.

Helen said Bill Markwart’s father is not well. We send our thoughts out to him.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:31 p.m.
